People use the two terms as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and booking the wrong one is the most common expensive mistake in floor care.
The simple test
If you can pick it up and carry it, it is a rug. If it is fastened down and runs wall to wall, it is carpet. That single distinction determines everything about how it should be cleaned, because one of them can be taken somewhere and the other one cannot.
How carpet is cleaned
Wall-to-wall carpet is cleaned where it lies. There is no alternative. The method is hot water extraction: pre-vacuum to remove dry soil, an alkaline pre-spray with dwell time, mechanical agitation, then a high-temperature rinse under pressure with immediate vacuum recovery, followed by controlled drying.
The constraint is that you can only put in as much water as you can pull back out. Over-wet a carpet and the moisture goes into the pad and the subfloor, where it does not dry, and you get mold or delamination. Everything about in-place carpet cleaning is a balance between cleaning power and moisture control.
How rugs are cleaned
A rug is portable, which removes the constraint entirely. At a rug plant a rug can be:
- Dusted properly. A rug can hold several pounds of dry grit deep in the foundation. Dedicated dusting equipment vibrates it out before any water is used. There is no equivalent for wall-to-wall carpet.
- Fully submerged. The whole body of the rug soaks and flushes, front and back, foundation included. Nothing about in-place cleaning touches the foundation of a rug.
- Rinsed until the water runs clear rather than until the recovery tank is full.
- Dried under controlled conditions at a temperature chosen for the fiber, which is what stops wool shrinking and prevents dye migration.
Why cleaning a rug like carpet goes wrong
Running a wand over an area rug on your living room floor does four things wrong at once. It puts water into a rug that cannot be lifted out from underneath, so moisture sits against your floor. It never removes the embedded dry soil, because that requires dusting. It uses carpet chemistry and heat, which shrink wool and bleed unstable dyes. And it leaves the rug drying flat on a floor for a day or more, which is how you get mildew and a permanently musty rug.
Hand-knotted wool, silk, viscose and antique rugs are the ones where this causes irreversible damage. A cheap synthetic area rug will usually survive it. A Persian rug frequently will not.
What this means in Bend specifically
Central Oregon’s fine pumice and volcanic grit makes the dusting stage matter more here than in most of the country. That grit is angular and abrasive. Left in a rug foundation it cuts the fibers from the inside every time the rug is walked on, and no amount of surface cleaning removes it. This is the single strongest argument for having rugs washed off-site rather than cleaned in place.
So which do you need?
Both, usually. Most Bend homes have wall-to-wall carpet in bedrooms and hallways and area rugs in living spaces, and they need different services. We do the carpet in your house and take the rugs with us. See carpet cleaning in Bend for the in-place work, or the rug cleaning service for anything that gets picked up and carried.
